The middle ground between fixed and floated
The SM-SH12 is designed for riders who want strong power transfer but aren’t ready to give up float entirely. By placing the pivot point at the front of the cleat rather than centrally, lateral sliding movement is eliminated — but the cleat still permits a small amount of angle change from that pivot point back towards the heel, so your foot isn’t completely locked in.
With two degrees of float (one degree in each direction), it occupies the middle ground between Shimano’s Red (0°, fully fixed) and Yellow (6°, most forgiving) cleats — a sensible choice for riders who’ve moved past needing maximum float but don’t want to go fully fixed.
