Argon 18 Grey Matter FAQs
Everything you need to know before ordering a Argon 18 Grey Matter through Tri Harder.
What's different about the Grey Matter compared to the rest of the Argon 18 gravel range?
It’s the aluminium option. It keeps Argon 18’s race-inspired gravel geometry and handling, but in a hydroformed aluminium frame that trades some weight for durability and a lower price — £1,950 versus the carbon models above it.
Is the Grey Matter suitable for commuting and year-round riding?
Yes — it’s built for exactly that. The frame has fender and rack mounts, so it’s ready for commuting, winter miles, and bikepacking straight out of the box, not as an afterthought.
What builds are available?
Two SRAM Apex options: the mechanical SRAM Apex XPLR at £1,950 and the wireless SRAM Apex AXS XPLR at £2,300. Every build is customisable to your budget and goals.
How much tyre clearance does the Grey Matter have?
Up to 42mm, running Vittoria Terreno Dry 700x38c tyres as standard — enough for most UK gravel and mixed-surface riding, though tighter than the carbon models higher in the range.
What colour is the Grey Matter available in?
One colourway: Tundra Green Gloss.
Why choose aluminium over one of the carbon models?
Aluminium gives you Argon 18’s race-honed handling at the most accessible price in the range, with better resistance to knocks and wear — a sensible choice for a daily, do-it-all bike rather than a lightweight race machine.
What We Think Of The Argon 18 Grey Matter
Grey Matter is proof you don't need carbon to get Argon 18's race-honed handling. It's the bike I'd point a commuter or year-round rider to — something that'll take a knock, take a rack, and still handle like their fancier bikes upstairs.
What we like
- £1,950 entry point — the most accessible way into the Argon 18 gravel range by a wide margin
- Aluminium frame trades some weight for genuine durability — a sensible call for winter training or daily commuting miles
- Fender and rack mounts mean it's ready for bikepacking or year-round UK use out of the box, not an afterthought
Worth knowing
- Only one colourway (Tundra Green Gloss) — no choice if that doesn't suit
- 42c tyre clearance is noticeably tighter than Dark Matter's 57mm — less room to go wide if you want maximum gravel capability
- Only two build options (SRAM Apex mech or AXS) — narrower choice than the carbon models in the range
Best For
Riders who want Argon 18's race-inspired handling and geometry but need a durable, do-it-all bike for commuting, winter miles, or bikepacking — not ultimate lightweight performance.
