The PD-RS500 is Shimano’s entry point into the SPD-SL road pedal system — the same platform used across the whole Shimano road range, tuned here specifically for riders who are new to clipless pedals or want the easiest possible step in and step out.
A larger entry target makes it simpler to find and engage the cleat without looking down, and the spring tension is set lighter than Shimano’s higher-tier pedals, so less force is needed to release. Both changes are aimed squarely at reducing the learning curve that puts a lot of riders off clipless pedals in the first place.
